Fashionably Functional Liquid Crystal Shades
Air Force Research Laboratory

A pilot’s helmet-mounted display screen can wash out in changing light conditions during flight. This visibility problem led to a revolutionary liquid crystal technology that is working its way into helmet visors as well as combat eyewear for on-the-ground warfighters.

With support from the Air Force Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, AlphaMicron integrated liquid crystal into a flexible film that can instantly adapt to changing light conditions, automatically or with the click of a switch. Today, this eTint® technology is being transitioned into military use, and is also appearing in motorcycle helmets, cycling glasses, and high-fashion eyewear.

AlphaMicron’s eTint® is just one of many successful innovations enabled by the U.S. Air Force’s SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. For more information, visit www.afsbirsttr.com.
