The Maryland Army National Guard’s 1st Squadron, 158th Calvary Regiment (Long Range Surveillance) conducted fast rope insertion and extraction training at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, on April 11, 2015. In the event of a non-viable landing situation, these Maryland Guard Soldiers are able to deploy to an area and quickly react to a situation. Pilots and flight crew from the 29th Combat Aviation Brigade provided the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters for the troops. This allowed the pilots and crews to accumulate the flight hours needed for proficiency. Even the Maryland National Guard’s newest airframe, the LUH-72 Lakota helicopter, participated in this mission. Participating in the training were soldiers from the Estonian Defence Force though the State Partnership Program.
