Partner Nations Join Army Civil Affairs for Conference on Crime, Drugs
AFN Bavaria
July 30, 2015 | 1:46
Civil Affairs representatives from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras joined their U.S. counterparts in Guatemala City for a three day conference discussing better ways to combat transnational crime and drugs.
Script:
Combating transnational crime and drug smuggling were among the topics discussed when Civil Affairs leaders from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras joined some of their American military counterparts for a regional Civil Affairs conference at the Guatemala Ministry of Defense. The conference showed how critical it is for nations to coordinate across borders to reduce these threats.
MAJ Reed: “It’s even more important that these countries are talking to each other that all partners are engaging, sharing that information, sharing their procedures and techniques for Civil Affairs. They are planning not only for their own existing operations and efforts in their countries, but now we can look at a regionalized plan and engagement.”
The partner nation representatives worked closely together during the three day conference and came away with a stronger understanding of how they can be allies against transnational crime and drugs.
COL Gonzalez: “This conference enables us to learn about the capacities, needs and strategies that each country applies in its territory in order to counteract these faceless threats.”
With emphasis placed on achieving mutual security objectives, the shared experience at the conference could result in a safer Central America.
LTC Melgar: “The truth is this conference has been very useful, we obtained and acquired new knowledge and ways of improving our planning of civil affairs in support of the population.”
