Indianapolis Post No. 99 brings 150 veterans to Washington to visit National WWII, Korea and Vietnam Memorials. WASHINGTON- The morning of Sept. 5, 2011, Indiana AMVETS Post No. 99 brought more than 150 veterans and their family members for the “Veterans Serving Veterans” flight No. 5 to visit the national memorials in D.C. Congressman Mike Pence was on hand to greet the veterans, as they toured the World War II Memorial at the nation’s capitol. This was the fifth honor flight hosted by Post 99, which raised over $250,000 to make the latest trip possible. Post 99 Commander Don Derringer first developed the idea in spring 2008, allowing hundreds of Indiana WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans to visit their respective memorials, some of whom have never been before. While on the day-long tour of the nations capital, the Indiana veterans toured Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A wreath laying ceremony was also conducted at the tomb by Indiana National Guard’s Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger and Maj. (Ret.) Ron Himsel, the former commander of Indiana National Guard’s 151st Infantry “D” Rangers, the only Indiana Guard unit to serve in Vietnam.
