During the NATO exercise, Trident Juncture, the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services conducted an exercise to train the Norwegian health sector. One of the five exercises was held in Elverum. The main focus of the exercise in Elverum was on CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense), as well as mass injury. During this exercise, the medical-, fire-, and police department were supported by the French CBRN Battalion of the 2nd Dragoon Regiment on stand-by for the NATO Response Force.

“My name is Lieutenant General Christian Juneau, I’m the Deputy Commander of Joint Force Command Naples but I’m the Exercise Director for Trident Juncture 18”
“Well, the exercise, when Norway was selected to be the host of the excise. They also asked to test their Total Defense Concept, which is really all the services, all the agencies, the institutions of Norway operating were they into a situation of a conflict. So our scenario of course (we’re in a conflict situation) we brought here a huge amount of troops, vehicles and so on. And everything from supporting the arrival, the movement of all of these assets to the interface during this exercise. And we have an example here today what’s going on where we have a NATO element that is dealing with a terrorist attack and there’s some chemicals being used. But also we have police, we have fire services, health services of Norway working hand in hand with NATO.”

“The CBRN Battalion is an inter-alliance battalion, composed of two squadrons of the French Army of the Second Dragoon Regiment and one squadron of Danish soldiers, also specialised in CBRN events. We are also supported by EOD and the Air Force specialised in CBRN.”
“CBRN is Chemical, Radiological, Biological and Nuclear weapons. We are basically fighting against mass destructive weapons. And our aim is to give support to the army. As a French unit we support the French army, but as a CBRN battalion, we support all the troops of NATO and also, as you can see behind me, the civil services if they request us.”

“We have had five exercises, and this is the one focussing on CBRN. We are having training on a terrorist scenario. Then civilian resources and military resources are working together to solve it. Now the French CBRN battalion will come and do their part in the exercise.”
“It’s like resources in the country – civilian, official, government and everyone involved in the civil sector are supporting our armed forces and do their part, so we have enough resilience and we work together to have a strong total defence system.”
