JFC Naples Commander Admiral James G. Foggo, (center) Croatian Brigadier General Danko
Pintaric, Joint Logistics Support Group Commander, (right) and Rear Admiral (Lower Half) Runi
Sommer, Head of the Norwegian Liaison to Joint Logistics Support Group, give an interview on
progress thus far for Trident Juncture 2018 at a training ground in Sessvollmoen, Norway. The
unit is part of NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, which is exercising in Norway as
part of Trident Juncture 2018.

NATO and Norway are holding one of the largest military exercises ever held in the country.
During October and November, around 50,000 participants from all over NATO and its partners
have come to Norway for exercise Trident Juncture 2018. The exercise tests the whole military
chain – from troop training at the tactical level, to command over large forces. It trains the
troops of the NATO Response Force and forces from other allies and partners, ensuring they
can work seamlessly together.

“It’s great to be here today in Norway for my first stop with Brigadier General Pintaric of the
Croatian Armed Forces, somebody from our headquarters in Naples, and Commodore Sommer,
who is an old friend from host nation Norwegian Armed Forces. What’s interesting and
important about my visit is that it’s my first visit in country for the kickoff, or the start, of
exercise Trident Juncture so you may ask why did I choose to come to the Joint Logistics
Support Group first? Because I believe that logistics are the Achilles heel of any operation in the
field and logistics have become the sixth domain of warfare. So, when we talk about the
maritime domain, the land component, the air domain, cyber, and space, two recent domains
added in the last ten years out of necessity, we now have a sixth domain to talk about and that
is logistics, the Achilles heel. So, if it weren’t for these two gentlemen and this team that has
done an enormous amount of work to get all the troops for Trident Juncture off ships, off
aircraft, and from vehicles that have come by land here, we wouldn’t be able to conduct the
training in the field so thank you very much for what you’ve done and would you like to make
any comments?”

“All missions that you gave to JLSG have been accomplished and everything is going according
to the plans.”

“It’s a pleasure having NATO as a visitor and this exercise and so far, this exercise everything
has gone great and it will continue to go great.”

“I’m extremely impressed. If you look at the numbers of containers that have arrived in country:
2100 containers, thousands of troops, thousands of tracked vehicles. You see some of the
wheeled vehicles behind us and on top of these transport vehicles you see tracked vehicles out
in the theater. Dozens of aircraft. Almost in total 50,000 personnel who are in the land, air, and
sea domains in and around Norway and our Partner nations of Sweden and Finland so I couldn’t
be happier and months ago I told General Pintaric in the headquarters in Naples how hard this
would be and I said the RSOM will be the first small victory if you can get everyone on the
ground and both he and Commodore Sommer have done one heck of a job and I’ve very happy
with that.”

“The challenges ahead are the ambitious program we’ve set for ourselves. A reminder to our
people in the field that this is an exercise, it is not a crisis or a war so we should not be in any
rush and when we talk about potential adversaries out there that have malicious intent towards
NATO whether that be in the land the sea or the air domain or in cyberspace there’s one other
that we need to consider and that’s the enemy of weather and so this is a very cold climate,
very arduous conditions. The weather forecast for the next couple of weeks indicate that it’s
going to get colder, wetter, and icier and so I want all the troops to be very safe and take
operational risk management into account and if there’s something that we can’t do we’re not
going to take excessive risk because like I said, it’s an exercise. We’re already learning a lot just
by being here.
