Did you know the Coast Guard maintains more than 50,000 lighthouses, buoys and other markers essential for maritime navigation? They change light bulbs, scrape and paint metal, and bang out dents any boats have caused. These aids to navigation are essential to maritime safety, since they often provide the only guidance for channel locations, shoals, reefs and other hazards.
