June 27, 2012 | 18:19
One of the first black enlisted Marines in the Marine Corps, retired First Sergeant William "Jack" McDowell, shares his experience coming of age during a time of segregation in the military, and what he went on to accomplish afterward. McDowell was attending the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony to accept the medal on behalf of about 19,000 Marines trained at the segregated Montford Point camp during the 1940s. Available in high definition.
