Tanker tours delight crowds

During the annual Wings Over Wayne air show in mid-May, crowds flocked to the KC-135R Stratotanker on display. The aircraft, which if flown by the 916th Air Refueling Wing, Air Force Reserve at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C. has a 50-year history as part of the Air Force's arsenal. The plane is used for in-flight refueling, transportation and cargo and aero-medical evacuation. More than 100,000 people attended this year's air show. Cadets fly high with Reserve wing

As one of the few flying wings on the east coast to still support regular Junior ROTC and ROTC flights, the 916th Air Refueling Wing, Air Force Reserve ended their annual orientation flight program for the summer in May. North Carolina employers learn military tactics

During the North Carolina Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve annual tour more than 30 employers were able to visit an Active/Reserve Wing at Charleston AFB, SC. Employers traveled with the 916th Air Refueling Wing at Seymour Johnson AFB, NC for two days in April. They experienced a KC-135R in-flight refueling w/F-15s and while at Charleston were able to see equipment used to detect and destroy improvised explosive devices, such as this robot used by the Exploded Ordinance Division. 916th NCO of the year, 2006

Staff Sgt. Charles Alford was named the 916th ARW's Noncommissioned Officer of the Year. Staff Sgt. Alford is a technical control technician with the 716th Communications Flight. He volunteered a full year of his computer expertise in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His leadership and instructional support regarding the techniques and operational procedures within his shop, as well as his supervision of the operation and maintenance of equipment, was instrumental in the success of his unit's mission. Military night highlights Air Force Reserve

The Durham Bulls, AAA baseball team for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, welcomed Air Force reservists and their families on April 24 for their military appreciation night. Air Force Reserve recruiters were on-hand to welcome the crowds and pass out information about the reserves. 916th ARW's speakers program in action

The 916th Air Refueling Wing, Air Force Reserve, has an active speaker's bureau program in which members of the KC-135 tanker wing talk on various topics pertaining to the Air Force Reserve. The speaker's bureau program gives roughly 20 speeches a year to various civic organizations and schools throughout North Carolina. Capt. Brotherly love extends through the ranks

Tech. Sgt. Stephen Woofter, a member of the 514th Air Mobility Wing at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J. re-enlists in the U.S. Air Force during a ceremony performed by his brother, 1st Lt. Christopher Woofter, 916th Air Refueling Wing, Air Force Reserve. Sergeant Woofter previously served in the Virginia Army National Guard as an infantry instructor. "I was ecstatic to be able to perform the ceremony for my brother," said Lt. Woofter. Lt. Woofter explained on a sibling rivalry note that it is his signature that resides at the bottom of his brother's enlistment documents for the next six years. "I am so happy that our family continues to have strong ties to the military and that many of our family members were able to attend the ceremony," said Lt. Woofter.

Moonlighting members invite bosses to fly

For many a second job might be against company policy, but for traditional reservists of the 916th Air Refueling Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base their part-time job defending the nation became an exciting field trip for their civilian bosses in mid-March. The air-to-air refueling wing invited more than 40 employers from across North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia to learn about the wing and see a mid-air refueling. At the end of the day employers were able to meet up with their Reserve employees to take a tour of their work station and learn more about how their employees give back to the nation in many different ways. When the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2006 they shared the magic of the cup with their adoring fans. Recently, Senior Master Sgt. James Nickel, 916th Civil Engineer Squadron, Air Force Reserve, was excited to pose with the prestigious Stanley Cup as it toured the state of North Carolina.

Engineers name reservist top contributor

Master Sgt. Grady Raynor received top honors from the Society of Military Engineers in mid-February when he received the society's Goddard Medal. The medal is presented for outstanding contributions to military engineering, including military troop construction, base maintenance, and contingency engineering. The medal was first awarded in 1973. Sergeant Raynor is an engineer with the 916th Air Refueling Wing, Air Force Reserve.

Snoopy goes to war with reservists

In 1968, Snoopy was discovered in the back of truck by then Corporal Thomas Wolf. Snoopy traveled with Wolf during his 27-year military career spanning the Marine Corps, Army Reserve, Navy Reserve and finally Air Force Reserve. Sergeant Wolf retired from the 916th Air Refueling Wing in May 2001 and left Snoopy to carry on his military career with his son, Karl Wolf, in the 916th Security Forces Squadron.
