Safety is a job we all take seriously, but even safety officers need a day away from the office to learn and grow in their field.

Recently, the 916th Air Refueling Wing's Safety Office joined community leaders for the 60th Annual Wilmington Safety and Health School. The school was established by Wilmington, N.C. local businesses to promote important safety and health information to the public.

The school held sessions that included the North Carolina EPA regulations for lead paint and asbestos control . Experts detailed the various types of chemical protective equipment and their limitations and conference goers viewed a demonstration on why steel toe boots provide five times better protection than normal shoes.

Crane safety experts gave instructions on how to inspect cranes and related equipment for defects and proper usage, but Department of Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry was the highlight of the event. She gave us a no holds barred look at the state vs. federal government conflicts over fine limits and control of safety programs.

"It was a very interesting and overall, very informative event," said Lt. Col. Matt Young, 916th Safety Officer.
