916th recruits them young

Capt. Jessica Guarini and Maj. Shannon Mann weren't giving the oath of enlistment, but they were talking to students about the importance of staying out of trouble and keeping away from drugs while at the same time showing them some cool military equipment.

On April 8, the two 916th Air Refueling Wing officers, participated in Cooper Elementary School's Community Day. They talked to nearly 600 students throughout the morning about their jobs, their experience in the military and answered a slew of questions from 'Where have you traveled?' to 'Has your plane ever been shot down?'.

The two handled it all in stride, with an occassional laugh at the youthfully-innocent questions. But they had some questions of their own to ask the students as well.

In order to try on the helmets, chemical gear and try a meal-ready-to-eat, the pair asked the students to answer questions that ranged from 'Who is the vice president of the United States?' to 'What country did we recently help bomb because their dictator was hurting their people?' They also asked them to do push-ups and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

From kindergarten to fifth grade, the students piled into an outside auditorium to listen to the Airmen talk about the KC-135R Stratotanker, to see various pictures of Air Force planes and to see trinkets collected from across the globe to include Germany, Korea and Afghanistan.

Teachers and volunteers were thrilled with the presentation. "The students really enjoyed it, "said Lynn Clark, a volunteer at the school. "And it's as much the girls talking about it as the boys."

Other community demonstrations included the local fire department with their smoke house, a music lesson and a tae-kwan-do demonstration.
