It took a little bit of effort, but the payout was well worth it.

This time last year, Master Sgt. Jamie Applequist, a Reservist with the 916th Logistics Readiness Squadron, wanted to recognize his employer for their tremendous support of his military career. What started out as a small way to say 'thank you' turned into a national tribute as the State Employees Credit Union, in Raleigh, N.C., was recognized as one of the most supportive employers in the nation, winning the 2011 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.

Leadership from Applequist's organization went to Washington D.C. where they were honored with a large crystal eagle award designed by Tiffany's. It is the highest recognition the U.S. government gives to employers of Guard and Reserve members. SECU was one of only 15 employers chosen nationwide.

On Oct. 22, 2011, Applequist was able to host SECU chairman of the board, McKinley Wooten, and senior vice president of humans resources, Mark Twisdale to the 916th Air Refueling Wing. The three, along with Col. Randy Ogden, wing commander, gathered on the flightline for a photo in front of the wing's newly minted 25th anniversary KC-135R Stratotanker.

Nominations are once again open for the 2012 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award and will be accepted till January 16, 2012. More information about the award, and how to nominate, can be found at: http://www.freedomaward.mil/
