It might be a free cup of coffee or a sign that reads, "We support our troops", in general North Carolinians take great pride in thanking those who serve in the military.

Once a year, those same military members are afforded an opportunity to thank their employers at the annual North Carolina Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve banquet. The banquet boasts between 300-400 guests representing the public and private sector.

On March 9, the event was held at Raleigh's North Hilton and a many people representing all branches of the Guard and Reserve, legislative offices and businesses from across the state came together to pay tribute to those employers that went above and beyond in the past year.

Fifty-six companies received the state Chairman's Above and Beyond Award and three companies received the Pro Patria Award, the state's highest award.

While no 916th reservists were present with their employers, there were several companies represented that have 916th reservists on their payrolls.

Col. Greg Gilmour, 916th Air Refueling Wing commander, and Col. Craig Shenkenberg, 916ARW vice commander, were both on hand to help celebrate. Maj. Erin Karl, 916th public affairs officer, opened the event as the national anthem singer and later performed God Bless America.
